Studio

A small practice with deep attention.

James Stockwell Architecture is a four-person practice based in Sydney. Projects are predominantly residential, including multi-residential and small-scale public buildings.

The practice develops architectural work specific to each project, with a common thread of context, passive solar design, low running costs, and the belief that architecture tells a story of its place and people.

James Stockwell established the practice in 2000 after formative work across urban design, landscape architecture, educational buildings and award-winning residential architecture.

The studio remains deliberately small and collaborative, with a four-person team allowing each commission to be held closely from first site reading through detail, construction and occupation.

Architecture tells a story of its place and people.

Projects begin with land, climate, water, light, topography and the lives of the people who will inhabit them. The work is not conceived as isolated objects, but as relationships between place, use and material consequence.

The practice is concerned with passive solar design, natural light, low running costs, natural low embodied-energy materials and an enhanced experience of landscape.

Environmental thinking is treated as architectural order: power, water, climate, site and material are part of the form-making process.

James has taught, tutored and lectured from 2000 to 2025 across UWA, RMIT, UTS, Sydney University and UNSW.

He has also delivered lectures in Jakarta and Auckland.

Teaching, talks and public discussion extend the practice’s interest in environmental intelligence, craft, site and architectural meaning.
